Definition: Cystic hygromas are developmental abnormalities of the lymphoid system that occur at sites of lymphatic-venous connection, most commonly in the posterior neck. Cystic hygromas are believed to be the result of maldevelopment of the lymphatic juglar sacs. They are frequently associated with karyotypic abnormalities, various malformation syndromes, and several teratogenic agents. The common complications of these malformations are respiratory obstruction, dysphagia, infection, and hemorrhage.
